How the Arrows Work and Why This Theory Can Unlock Deeper Understanding and Application

In this episode, we're breaking down how the arrows work, beyond "Stress" and "Growth." I was first introduced to this theory a number of years ago, and it has revolutionized the way I teach the Enneagram AND the way I apply the arrows in my daily life.

This episode features one example of movement to the high side, and one example of movement to the low side, but I've written all about this perspective in Enneagram in Real Life, featuring more examples of each movement and strategies to build more of the high side of each arrow.

Welcome or welcome back to any gram in real life. The podcast where we explore how to apply our Enneagram knowledge in our daily lives. I'm your host, Stephanie Barron hall. And on today's episode, we are talking all about the arrows. So, if you're familiar with the Enneagram, then you have probably heard about the arrows before, but if not, I'm going to explain a little bit about what I mean by that. And what you need to know about them. So the arrows are another helpful way to see more dynamic movement within the Enneagram, each type can access to types. It's connected to you on the Enneagram diagram. So, if you can picture an Enneagram diagram, you'll notice that wherever your number is on the diagram, there are two lines that cross the diagram. So for example, for type three, You'll see that you're connected to type six and type nine. Something that I think sometimes people get confused is that they can just decide which arrows they have, but it's actually part of the integration of the diagram overall. Um, but today I want to talk a little bit about why I see the arrows differently than some other Enneagram teachers and why I think it's a really important way of understanding this. So some Enneagram teachers consider one arrow, the growth or the integration arrow, and the opposite arrow, the stress arrow, or disintegration arrow. And what's meant here by integration or disintegration, is that when you're doing really well, you go one direction and when you're not doing well, you go the other direction. And you know, that a lot of original Enneagram books that we, many of us have read, like the wisdom of the Enneagram, teach the arrows this way. But after a few years of working with clients, one-on-one I just found that this was not winding up in practice. Like I would work with somebody. Whether that was in a typing interview or a coaching. And I would say, this is how this works. And they'd be like, yeah, but can it go the other way? Cause I really see it going the other way too. And I started to notice in my own life that it goes the other way to meaning. Um, as a type three myself, then I've, I've noticed myself accessing good parts of the type nine and, um, some of the bad parts or unhealthy parts of type six. And so that would kind of be opposite of what we would expect when we're using that strict stress or growth. Framework. So upon for the research I began to uncover. A more dynamic way of looking at the arrows. So I was first introduced to this. Through the books. the complete any grant by Beatrice Chestnut and then also through Sandra Maitri sole child theory. So if you've read the book, the spiritual dimension of the Enneagram. You can find her concept of the soul child in that book. It's actually toward the very back of the book. Um, it's not in the chapters themselves, so make sure you check the table of content. If you have it. Um, that's where you can find that content. And then when I was doing my training with the Chestnut Paice Enneagram academy, I learned even more about this and it really solved a lot of issues for me because one of the main challenges. To how I previously taught and have learned. Um, this concept is that. The stress and growth points, you know, quote unquote stress and quote unquote growth. It seems simple, but the simplicity didn't really convey reality for us. So this way of teaching it, that I'm going to share with you today actually allows us to observe freer movement between the types. So the full access that we each have to, the other points is better represented. When. Described as a flow between the types of flow with the arrows. Um, and that means we can access the positive and negative aspects of both arrows. So I first taught it this way. About four years ago when I created my course Enneagram in real life, the course, and. I've just further hone and define this since then. So I renamed the points. Um, so one point is the recovery point. And if you look at an Enneagram diagram, Most traditional Enneagram diagrams, for example, on the cover of the complete Enneagram book. You'll notice that the lines actually have directional arrows to them. and so this is a traditional way of illustrating the Enneagram. Sometimes people. We'll kind of do the arrows. Like both ways, like away from the core type. But I actually think it helps you remember. Which one I'm calling the recovery in which one I'm calling the transformation. If you keep those directional arrows in mind. Let's think about type two, for example, as the core type. Type four. Is the recovery point. So on those traditional Enneagram diagrams. The arrow from four is directed at two. So from type two, we're going against the arrow. And that will be the recovery point. So anytime you're looking at one of those diagrams and you. Go against the arrow and that's the recovery point. And then type eight from type two is the transformation point. So the recovery point features and aspect of the self that you need to recover and develop to pave the way for growth. This is sometimes the one that's also called the security. Or growth number, but that doesn't quite capture what we really need to happen here. And so some teachings like Beatrice Chestnut and Rania pies, and then also Sandra, my ATRI. Would say that this is the point that we need to go back and revisit to get something from. So that's kind of where this overlaps with the soul child theory. Also, if you've read the book, the Enneagram guide to waking up by Beatrice Chestnut and Toronto pies. Um, the opening of each chapter for each of the types. Illustrates a little bit of a synopsis of, what it might've looked like for a childlike version of that type to live in that. So for example, For type two, it would have been like the childlike version of type four, um, is kind of their inner life, their inner dialogue. and so those have been yet. Illustrate even more succinctly the sole child's theory. Then the transformation point is the direction of sustainable growth. So the term transformation conveys the metamorphosis that's available to us when we access this aspect of ourselves. And a little bit of my theory. Is that. The high side of the transformation point. Um, you'll see a lot of the same qualities that you'll actually see. If you look at the virtue of your type. That's not something that's necessarily in any gram Canon, but it's kind of the way that I see it. And so I'll use my type as an example again. So for type three, Um, the transformation point is type nine. And the virtue of three is veracity. And at the high side of nine. There is. This sense of being really true to yourself, um, and really sticking by your morals and like having an innate sense of worth and understanding of your true worth. And so I feel like there is an overlap there of. The virtue of the type and the high side of the transformation point. But even though we have, you know, the recovery point, that transformation point. We can move both directions., in multiple ways. So when we're less conscious, we can easily pick up the lower or average aspects of either type. And so when I say less conscious, what I really mean is when we're tired, when we're just drifting, when we haven't been taking good care of ourselves, when we're just. Stressed or overwhelmed or all these different things. Like when we're not really paying attention, um, we can just drift to both of those sides. So right now, think about your type. And think about both of those airlines and you might see some aspects of the lower side. Of both of the types. In your life. Okay. So then the growth process here is to build our ability to intentionally access the higher side of both types. So even though I already mentioned, you know, there, there is kind of an order to it. Like you work through the recovery point first and then the transformation point. I think it's possible for all of us to access the higher side of both of the types. So in my new book, any Grimm in real life. Each. Type. Has instructions on how to build. The high side of each of their arrow types. So there are a couple of practices that will kind of help you integrate and help you build those more. And I really liked that angle because I. Love the idea of finding more integration and balance through the Instagram overall. So we're not just focused on our own type, but also focus on our connections as well. And so I think that perspective is really helpful and important. But for today. What I want to share with you is a little snippet of each of the types. So I'm going to start with type eight and I'm going to share a little bit about the recovery point and what that could look like. And then the transformation point. So for type eight. The recovery point is type two. Unintentional drift to the lower side. Of type two. Could really look like being invasive and controlling, especially around fixing everyone else's life. Like sometimes when eights are in this space. They really think I know best, actually. And if you don't listen to me, you're kind of an idiot. And I have heard eight say almost exactly that. But sometimes it's not that overt. And sometimes there is kind of that assumption of like, well, they didn't do what I said, so. They made their own bed. And it can be this way of being really invasive and not respecting the other person's autonomy. And so that's an unintentional drift to the lower side of type two. Now intentional movement to the higher side of type two could look like. Offering themselves kindness and support now. Eights. Tend to have like a let's just conquer and push through this attitude. And that's their perspective on a lot of things. And. Healthy twos are able to support themselves and offer kindness and offer compassion. And so when eights access that healthy aspect of type two, they're able to not only acknowledge their own needs and that they need love, they need to reach out and they need community, but also offer themselves that kindness and support that they're missing when they are not accessing this. Hi side of their era movement. The transformation point for type eight is type five. So unintentional drift to the lower side could look like. Using all of the data that they're gathering and all of their analysis to form really cutting arguments and pushing people away to avoid any emotional connection. The low side of five being like, Gaining all this information and then using it to isolate themselves from other people and especially being a little bit domineering in terms of, well, I'm just smarter than you, or, you know, again, like you're kind of an idiot. Um, taking that perspective. So that's the low side of five. And then the high side of five, so intentional movement to the higher side of five. Could look like just pausing first to gather more information before reacting and taking their time to say, Hmm. I'm going to think about that, or I'm going to look through that or I'm going to process that and then coming back to it. So really accessing that aspect of five And using it as a way to not only pause and gather themselves mentally, but also using it as a way to gauge their own. Abilities and what they can do physically and not push themselves way too hard. Next we have type nine. So the recovery point for type nine is type three. So unintentional direct to the lower side of type three. Could be using busy-ness to disconnect from themselves. Now nines already have a tendency to disconnect from themselves and threes, especially do this when. They really don't want to feel their feelings. They don't really want to. Get too in the weeds in terms of introspection. And so they get really busy. That's what? Three suits. They get busy. And so nines can actually access that. And I've seen it a lot of a way of. Narcotizing in a sense of where they're just being like, I'm just going to get as busy as possible and that will help me cope. So that's the low side of three. And intentional movement to the higher side of three. Could look like applying themselves. Toward their goals and feeling inspired by their own efforts. And I love this for nines because it's not only just applying themselves, which already takes gargantuan effort for nines. But also being like, I'm doing this for myself and I inspire myself like taking on that attitude and I think more threes do that, especially social threes. You see that a lot where they're like, I'm inspired by my own efforts. And so I really want nines to access. That aspect of three, because I think it's a really healthy space for them. Then the transformation point for tech nine is type six. Unintentional drift to the lower side could look like. This frustration that no one is looking out for them. So the frustration really comes from nines. Having this underlying anger. But then the frustration is that no one is looking out for them in the way that they want or need. And I think sometimes sixes, especially self pres. Sixes, but other sixes as well, really feel like everyone is out to get them. And like the world is against them. When they're in an unhealthy space. And so when I access that they get really angry that just like they're all alone and no one is looking out for them. And they, they start to get really resentful over that. Intentional movement to the higher side of type six. Could look like. Becoming alert and aware participants in their lives. And what I mean by this is. They. Are no longer narcotizing or checking out they're really active in their lives and they're making choices. And there. Having their own agency. Now sixes can struggle with indecision, but when six is, are a little bit healthier, They trust themselves more. And. They decide. Okay, I'm going to take responsibility here and I'm going to take agency here and I'm going to make a decisive choice and that's what nines can access here. So for type one, the recovery point is type seven. Unintentional drift to the lower side of type seven could be. Escaping into stimulation and behavior that they'll later regret. Such as overspending or excess of some sort. And I see this the most. When we talk about the trapdoor behavior for once. where one's. Do something that they it's actually morally and ethically wrong to them, but they just can't help themselves almost. It's like, I've been so good for so long. And I just have to let loose. And I think that that's actually, I'm indicative of the low side of type seven. Where they are really out of control and they just need something stimulating. Then intentional movement to the higher side. Of type seven could be leaning into playfulness and letting go of some of those inhibitions that often. Are holding them and that they really rely upon. For a sense of psychological safety. And recognizing that. Playfulness can be part of psychological safety, too. And I think that's really healthy for ones to access. and I always love. seeing ones be more playful and fun because that's in there and almost all ones that I know. but they don't always let it out. So I really like seeing that side. Of them. Then the transformation point for type one is type four. So unintentional drift to the lower side could have type four, could be just moving beyond. The I'm wrong. I need to do better, which is often the internal monologue of a type one. Two, there's something deeply irredeemably wrong with me and going into like this hopelessness or despair. That's really common in the lower side of type four. Intentional movement to the higher side of type four. Could look like just thinking outside the box and tapping more into their creativity, and leaning on imperfection and trusting the process. Type fours are so good at being more creative. They don't always have to be creative as in like artsy, but just kind of thinking about things differently and seeing things from lots of different angles for see a lot of nuance, a lot of gray area. And I think ones do really well when they're able to access a lot more of that and to really discover and integrate that into their daily perspective. Okay. Tied to. So the recovery point for type two is tight for so unintentional drift to the lower side could look like. Feeling or expressing that no one is taking care of me or my needs, or really just in general, becoming more moody and pouty than they would typically be. Um, obviously this is not how all type fours act, but the low side of type four, that's very evident. And I think a lot of the time for us can. Have sort of this victim mentality of really wanting other people to swoop in and save them. And so when twos access that, they still have their emotionality from being a two as well. And so they might just say, nobody's taking care of me, nobody's meeting my needs and, and feeling really upset about that. Then intentional movement to the higher side of type four, could be really making a lot of space for and acknowledging their normal human needs. Like the needs for love and attention and belonging and self care. Like fours are a lot more introspective than twos. Typically are. And so. To sometimes have a really hard time tapping into. What they actually need. And I think when they move to that high side of four, they can be a lot more aware of that and they can actually work then to meet those needs instead of kind of suppressing them and then feeling really resentful. and so it can be a really, really healthy space for twos to be a lot more introspective and to look into themselves and say, what is it that I really want or need or dream of and asking themselves those good questions that fours are often thinking about. Then the transformation point for type two is type eight. And unintentional drift to the lower side could be. Kind of the flip side of what we already talked about for type eights, it's becoming demanding and bossy and controlling. The low side of eight and the low side of two. Both have this kind of demanding attitude. So when a two is accessing the low side of type eight, it's like. They become really assertive about what they want and need. And a lot of it is propelled by this energy of, of not having their needs met for so long. And they're like, I've absolutely had it. Like you have to meet my needs now. And, that can be a really tough place for them to be in, in their relationships. And then intentional movement to the higher side of type eight. Could look like. Knowing what is there to do and what isn't so they can say no. And. They can say no to anything or anyone. And they know that the world will go on. And they don't always have to be the one to step up. And this is an incredible gift for twos. To really have this strength to say, no, that's actually. Not for me. I don't have to be the one to do that. and it can be alarming actually for people around them, but it's really, really important for, to, to learn how to protect themselves in this way. And I think that the self protection that they get from accessing their eight arrow can be really healthy and a really important. Part of them leading more balanced lives and setting boundaries and things like that. And I think that's something I want to note here as well. Is that the arrows offer us resources that we don't naturally access. If we're only looking at our own type. but a lot of the time, and we'll talk about this in a moment with Type three as well. A lot of the time we can learn really important lessons and we get specific wisdom from the arrows and we really need them to be able to protect ourselves and to move through the world in. A more integrated and balanced way. So for type three, the recovery point is type six. Unintentional drift to the lower side. Of type six. Could look like becoming highly anxious and insecure and uncertain, and which really renders them hesitant. To take risks for fear of failure or letting their image slip. And this is a site of threes that I don't think a lot of threes allow other people to see. But when I talk to threes, they do feel uncertain. They do feel anxious and they do feel insecure at times. And that's a really important thing to identify and to discover and kind of explore. for threes. And so they can maybe start to know, oh, this is like the lower side of type six. So intentional movement to the higher side of type six could be. Asking themselves. They're really good questions. They've been avoiding and. This is one of the things that really solidified this entire theory for me, because what I realized is that as a three, I wanted to be able to access. This calm and this Ability to rest that I see a lot more in nines. But the work that I had to do first. I was to ask myself these questions, like reevaluate my expectations of myself. And reevaluate where I expected my worth to come from. So for example, instead of always saying yes, if somebody asks me to do something, I would do what a six does more often and say, does this make sense right now? Am I doing this for myself or my image? Right? Maybe six is, don't ask that question, but they ask themselves questions. Is this aligned with what I want to do moving forward. Is this you in practical or feasible? Like, do I have capacity for this? Sixes are really good at asking themselves those questions. So I needed to use some of those. To build more space in my schedule. So that I could have more space for rest. so that's one of the things that I think is so important about this. So then the. the transformation point for type three is type nine. So unintentional drift to the lower side of nine could look like. Zoning out, numbing everything, perhaps collapsing on the couch and watching TV all weekend or being unable to get out of bed. If you know, a three you closely, like you have lived with them, you may have seen nine mode. And it can be kind of alarming, I think. But this is the lower side of type nine where it's not just respite. That's restorative. It's like And numbing out. And so three's. Co could do that. Intentional movement to the higher side of nine. I could look like really slowing down to intentionally rest, which allows them to connect with themselves and others. And really not focusing so much on, I have to earn my right to exist in this world and just taking for granted, like I exist. Like I'm here. I exist. and just having a little bit more ease and. Space just both for themselves and for the people around them. And I think that's a really important aspect. Of type nine that threes need to integrate. But like I said, we have to reevaluate where worth comes from first. And that is what paves away for us to find this space. All right. Type four. So the recovery point for type four is type one. Unintentional drift to the lower side of type one could be. Extreme black and white thinking. So one way that this plays out for fours is if they feel even slightly misunderstood, everything is like it's all for not F just throw everything out. why even try and really having that black and white kind of perspective on that. forest in general, find a lot of nuance and I, and they look at a lot of gray area, but when they're accessing the low side of one, they can be really black and white and really perfectionistic about things. And that can really trap them because it is one of those things that sends them down that comparison spiral. That is so bad for their mental health. And so I think it's really important for them. To recognize when they're floating to that low side of one. So then intentional movement to the higher side of one. Good look like becoming more practical and structured and focused. And finding a way to lean on discipline and systems, which ones are really, really good at ones are good at discipline systems and procedures. And really accessing those and leveraging them to accomplish their dreams because for us have these big expansive dreams, but sometimes they get caught in inaction and. Connecting more with type one can allow them to move more quickly into action, which one's typically. have this way of, of not necessarily always being quick to action, but they do move steadily toward action. And I think that's something that fours can really benefit from. And then the transformation point. It's type two. So unintentional drift to the lower side of type two could look like shape-shifting to appease others and avoiding conflict by sugarcoating or hiding what they feel or think. Now. Forrest don't typically shapeshift as much as the other two heart types and they don't typically share coat as much as the other two heart types. But when they're accessing the slower side of type two, they are feeling really insecure and they're feeling really like. Afraid of the rejection and the abandonment that might come. And so they start being in this wishy washy space and really uncertain of themselves. And so that state of mind can be really hard on them and their relationships. And then intentional movement to the higher side of type two can be. Really seeking to be of service and to support others. And this is really healthy for fours, I think because, sometimes when we think about fours, we think of Naval casing, right? So they're always looking down and they're looking inward. and it's so helpful for, for us to be able to like look up and look outward and look at everyone else around them, not in a comparative way, but to say, how can I be of service and that. It's actually really, really helpful for them. And I've seen a lot of fours really benefit from that because it helps them be more balanced and be more engaged in the world and feel less abandoned and feel less misunderstood because. They're focused on helping other people. And so that's the high side of type two that forest can access their. And you'll notice that type fours don't have any access. from the arrows, they do have wing access, but no, Aero access to the mental center. And now we're going to talk about fives who have. Wing access to the heart center, but no. Aero access. So fives are a funny one because, Both of their arrows are like get out of your head. So the recovery point for type five is type eight. And unintentional drift to the lower side of type eight. Could look like. Becoming a little bit more confrontational and black and white about arguments. A lot of the time fives are pretty amenable to other people, having a different perspective, as long as there's good data. And then they say, Hey, can you show me your sources? And. You know, I want to look into that, but they sometimes will use their feelings of intellectual superiority to a certain dominance over other people when they're accessing the low side of type eight. and this further as their isolation, it furthers the concept of I'm the only person that I can trust. And that can be a really bad space for fives, and can make them. Prone to more conspiratorial thinking and fear of the outside world. Then intentional movement to the higher side. Of type eight could look like feeling more grounded and embodied. And really being able to take action before they feel fully ready. And. That is so helpful for fives because it allows them to take all these mental models out of their head and put them into action in the real world. and that's really useful. Now you'll notice that some of the things that's sometimes overdue. Like here, we're talking about eight. Being really great at moving into action. Sometimes eight overdo that, but fives underdo that. So we're trying to bring both of them into balance and that's what the airlines help us to do. Then the transformation point for type five is type seven. So unintentional drift to the lower side of type seven. Could look like finding, focusing, challenging, which can interrupt effective action and clarity. Now. Five's really enjoy processing things and feeling really steady and feeling really even. And that can be really challenging. Um, if they are accessing the slower side of type seven, because they can tend to feel more frantic or more anxious. And they have a much harder time just sitting down and focusing and processing through the things that they want to think about. Um, and that ends up being a really, really stressful experience for most fives. Um, and they tend to not like it, but they don't know what to do about it. So that is a good indication that they're in this. Lower. Seven space. And then an intentional movement to the higher side. Could look like. Opening up a bit more about who they truly are. And what's beneath the surface and trusting that others truly wants to get to know them. So sevens tend to have this energy. That they're kind of like. Why wouldn't somebody want to get to know me? Why wouldn't somebody want to be my friend. But fives tend to feel like misfits and they feel a little bit uncomfortable in the world. Like the world just wasn't quite right for them. It's kind of like, they always can sense. Having like an itchy seam and their clothing or something like that's how fives often feel just moving through the world. And so when they access the higher side of type seven, they can have a lot more abundance, a lot more freedom, and they just perceive things differently because they have a lot of that. Type seven exuberance and positivity. Now we have type six. And. The recovery point for type six is type nine. Unintentional drift to the lower side of type nine. Could look like seeing even more sides of every issue. And then they become more stuck in indecision because they have even more information. Available to them, but less motivation to move forward. While nines and sixes can both be really indecisive. Sixes tend to be a little bit quicker to move into action, then nines are. And so when sixes are accessing the low side of type nine, they feel even more overwhelmed and more overcome. With feelings of I don't know what to do. I can't do this. And that can kind of just be a bad head space for them. Now intentional movement to the high side of nine. Could look like being able to relax and let things unfold. Now, nines have this ability to just say, let's just see how it goes. And sometimes it's like optimism, I guess. And. Maybe positivity, but it's not, not really. That it's more so well, we don't know how it's going to happen, or we don't know what's going to happen because nines aren't doing as much kind of projecting what is going to happen out in the future. They're like, this is what we have in front of us now. We'll just see how it goes. And so when sixes can access more of that, They're able to calm a lot of that frantic energy that they have moving in their minds. And integrate that more and be a little bit more balanced and feel a little better about who they are being in the world. Then the transformation point for type six is type three. So unintentional drift to the lower side. Could look like just for genetic activity, more anxious. And actually more anxious than purposeful. So. A lot of the time when sixes take action, they really think it out and they make sure, okay, there's purpose behind what I'm doing. But when sixes are accessing the low side of type three, they're not thinking about all of that. They're just doing, doing, doing, doing, doing. They have to do something at all times. And so it's really frenetic and it doesn't have a lot of productivity or purpose in it. Then intentional movement to the higher side of type three. Could look like. Being able to step into direct decisive action and really have it well prioritized and say, this is what we're going to do. And we're going to move forward. Six is sometimes have a really hard time making executive decisions. But threes are a lot more comfortable with that. So in six is access. That aspect of threes. They feel less indecisive, less helpful. They don't doubt themselves or second guess themselves as much, or look for reassurance. They just have this level of confidence that can be really healthy for them because it also helps them build. Confidence. Cause they have all this evidence of like, look, I did it and I'm doing it and I'm moving forward. So there's also that optimism that comes with it and they are able to see success as a probable outcome. So they're not just seeing all the possible ways everything could fall apart, but also success is the most probable outcome when they're accessing high side of type three. And then last, but never least we have type seven. Their recovery point is type five. So unintentional drift to the lower side of type five. Could look like increased anxiety about their freedom. And this is kind of related, I think in some ways too. The five fear of being intruded upon, but like fives and sevens both kind of believe no one else is going to meet my needs. I have to do that all on my own. And so when sevens are accessing the low side of five, they feel really anxious about this. they feel anxious at. They're going to be trapped. and they would really prefer to be isolated versus being intruded upon. and so they are really. Even more focused on being self-sufficient and meeting their own needs because they really don't feel comfortable in the world as it is. Intentional movement to the higher side of five. Could look like just choosing to add. Depth of knowledge, rather than breadth of knowledge. So it's that concept we're sevens tend to have knowledge that is a mile wide and an inch deep. and five, so the opposite. So when sevens access the high side of five, they really build these deep Wells of information and expertise and knowledge that they can draw upon and rely upon. And so they're able to focus their efforts on. Going deep on a topic versus having this wide breadth of all this knowledge though. The wide breadth of knowledge is great. If you want to go to a trivia night, But sometimes when they actually want to feel more solid and grounded in their career or their expertise, it's actually better to do it a little bit more of the five way. So we have to have a little bit of balance there. And then finally the transformation point of type seven is type one. So unintentional drift to the lower side of type one. Could look like a lot of frustration and irritation. And resentment, especially when things don't work out as planned. Now. The fixation for type seven is planning. And. Sevens, even if they're not letting you know all of this, they're constantly planning things. And sketching things out in their mind, like how they expect things to go or how they want things to go. Optimally and the lower side of type one. that becomes very rigid. And so they have all this frustration. They're irritated. They're resentful that no one else is doing enough or doing their part or people are bringing them down. And they bring all of that frustrated, irritated energy to the surface. Frustration is an easier emotion for a lot of sevens than other emotions, because. It kind of is one of those blankets it's like right there. and it also feels less sticky. So they're able to put it aside and move on. and so the lower side of type one, they have a lot of that frustration and irritation. and maybe even have an all or nothing mentality about it. Then intentional movement to the higher side of type one. Could look like really recognizing and appreciating. That having some sort of parameters and limitations can be helpful. rather than a hindrance, like it can be something that they can use to their advantage and draw upon. I sometimes see seven struggle with this, because they are, they. Like I know the sevens. I get this. Reputation for being Noncommittal and. Kind of flaky or, not finishing house projects or whatever else. But I actually think it's not that they're noncommittal. It's more so that That they don't want to acknowledge? No, I actually can't do that. Like I actually have to take that off my plate. there is something about certain projects or certain activities or whatever that seven to like. I'm still working on that. It's just like, not the first thing I'm working on right now. and so they kind of are like saying yes to way too much. And they have too many things that they're like quasi committed to, and that's where they get into trouble because they come off as flaky, even though they're like, oh, I have every intention of doing that. And following through on it. But it's just not the first thing I'm doing right now. and so when sevens access the high side of type one, they're a little bit more able to be like, no, I'm actually not going to finish. Resurfacing the bathroom vanity, or actually I'm going to say no to some of these work projects that I really wanted to do. But it's actually not feasible for my team to do all of them. And so we're going to narrow our focus. So those can be some of the really helpful aspects of the high side of one who have a lot more appreciation for limitations and structure and see them as a way to make things sustainable and sevens can really access that and find a lot of freedom. In saying no, and then really narrowing their focus. So. We made it through all nine types. And so. People changed their perspectives since they last wrote a book about it. So they might teach it differently. Now, even though, you know, those gold standards. Like wisdom of the Enneagram say something different. I think it's fine that there are differences of opinion on how the integration works in certain ways. But I also think it's important to note that most Enneagram teachers. Who are really well established. Our teaching the arrows more closely to this way. at this juncture. So.
